About the Author

Kortney Michelle Whan never intended to write a memoir.

She simply got tired of telling the same stories over and over.

A former nurse, healthcare navigator, educator, and lifelong student of human resilience, Kortney has spent decades adapting to life after a catastrophic spinal injury. Somewhere along the way, she discovered that viewing the human body as a corporation—with departments, meetings, grievances, and occasional administrative chaos—made even the most difficult experiences a little easier to understand… and a lot easier to laugh about.

What began as a way to entertain herself during quiet shifts in The Box, a small security office at the entrance of an amusement park, gradually became an archive of fifty years of observations, humor, miracles, bureaucracy, unexpected detours, and the wonderfully strange moments that make up an ordinary life.

When she’s not opening case files for Research Department, negotiating with Local 502, or listening to Executive Council debate the day’s agenda, Kortney enjoys solving puzzles, asking far too many questions, and reminding herself that everyone needs a giggle now and then.

She lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the investigation remains ongoing.
